India has the largest population of cattle, which is about 50% of the total cattle population of the world. However, in terms of milk production, we are lagging behind drastically. The dairy business of small farmers, particularly, does not seem profitable. |
The known reasons for low milk yield are: Low milk yielding country-breeds, poor nutrition and neglect of animal health. All these reasons probably exist because the dairy farmer does not have adequate information on hand. With a little extra effort the dairy farmer can earn well in his dairy business. He needs to learn: 1) to feed his animal systematically with good quality feeds and fodders and improve the quality of his herd by using cross-breeding techniques; 2) to maintain cleanliness in the cattle shed and follow sanitation and hygiene practices to keep diseases away; and 3) to prepare low-cost nutritious feed concentrates and learn to grow fodder. Farmers can turn the leftover milk in to various products like paneer, khoa and milk-based health drinks to fetch better money. |
Our series of 4 books on dairy cattle management include information on economics of dairy business, cattle insurance, cattle records, vaccination schedules etc. The titles are as follows: |
